Administrative HistoryMrs Elizabeth Carter, Deal.
DescriptionLetter from Mrs Elizabeth Carter, Deal, to Mrs Elizabeth Montagu, Sandleford, saying that she is glad that Montagu's disorder is in her eyelids rather than her eyes, as sight is very important. Letter explains that Carter did not write sooner to thank Montagu for her letter, as she was away at Eastrey for a few days, seeing friends. Letter mentions that Carter has not been feeling well, which was another hindrance in replying to Montagu's letter. Letter talks about Lady Holdernesse's [?wife of Robert D'Arcy, fourth earl of Holdernesse (1718 - 1778), politician] leaving Deal Castle. Letter talks about Carter's aquaintance with great Cumberland Street, but not with Cumberland Place. Carter writes that she has heard that Lady Bathurst [?possibly Georgina, nee Lennox (d. 20 Jan 1841), wife of Henry Bathurst, third Earl Bathurst (1762 – 1834), politician] has given orders for the purchase of a great part of Lady Holdernesse's furniture at Deal Castle. Letter mentions that Carter did not go to the sale; mentions "By what particulars that have yet come to our knowledge, our Loss, by the Engagement in the Mediterranean, is very inconsiderable compared with the first Reports. The ship which was taken was only armed in Flute, & had very few men on Board: & the Contest of the two which escaped, with so superior a Force, is greatly to the Honour of our gallant Sailors".
Letter mentions that there has been no report from Calais regarding happenings in Paris. Letter says that there is available a translation of Madame Roland's 'Appeal', which Montagu's servant can read to her. Carter writes that about Roland's Appeal that it "is of a singular kind, & very interesting & atecting, however you must disapprove the principles of the writer".
