Administrative HistoryMrs Elizabeth Carter, Deal.
DescriptionLetter from Mrs Elizabeth Carter, Deal, to Mrs Elizabeth Montagu, Sandleford, hoping that Montagu's health will benefit from the good weather; mentioning Carter's losing out from the fine weather because of her poor health, and saying the weather will be beneficial to the Harvest. Carter writes about the French prisoners, who had been brought to Deal, to be put onto a cartel ship to be exchanged for ?English prisoners. Carter talks about the nature of conflict in the French revolutionary wars and refers to French revolutionary principles: "We had several french prisoners brought here lately to be put into a Cartel Ship in exchange for ours. They were very gay, & had a Drum & music. One of them had a piece of Bread & butter in his Hand, & said that as he had nothing to drink, he would eat to the Health of the Republic [underlined]. Indeed there appears to be the same kind of principles among the Generality of people of France. The wind is now fair for the Emigrants. It is dreadful to think of the Blood that must be shed before the Success on either side is determined. In the fatal Attempt at ?Zuiberon [or ?Zuzberon] one is astonished at the Infatuation of trusting to the word of people whom they had let out of prison & who would be likely to promise & swear any Thing to regain their Liberty. Especially such people as had been taught to believe, there was no Being to whom they were accountable for their Actions".
Letter relates to Madame Roland's [probably Susanna Taylor [née Cook] (1755 - 1823), supporter of the French Revolution] 'Appeal' and briefly mentions Roland's life. Also, Letter talks about the fallen price of bread and appologises for the 'Blots', which are due to Carter's 'wretched pens' and her 'Head Ach'.

Addressed 'for Mrs Montagu Sandleford'.
