DescriptionUndated letter, dated 'Saturday forenoon', from George Campbell to James Beattie, saying that Campbell is puzzled by the application made to Beattie by Elphinston [?James Elphinston (1721 - 1809), educationist and advocate of spelling reform]. Campbell writes that if Beattie decides to subscribe to Elphinston that he should also put Campbell's name down. ?Post - script: "If you think it proper to propose at a College meeting, that a copy should be taken for the Library, I shall not be against it".

Letter annotated by James Beattie: "I have no acquaintance with Elphinston whatever; & I think it will be best not to answer his ?request at letter. J B".
