Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionArchbishop of York said he knew Beattie's views of docttrine and discipline of the Church of England, but wanted to have a letter in Beattie's hand to assure other Bishops that Beattie was well disposed and qualified to adorn their church. Mrs Montagu's sure that Beattie's admirable letter to the Archbishop will produce what he wants in a very short time. Dowager Duchess of Portland has read Beattie's work and will be recommending him to Lord Mansfield
