Administrative HistoryLord William Gordon [1744-1823] Second son of the 3rd Duke of Gordon, and younger brother of Beattie's friend the 4th Duke. The manic character of his letters to beattiewas characteristic of his life. He caused a scandal in 1769 when he eloped with Sarah Lennox, wife of Sir Charles Bunbury. He married Frances Shepherd, daughter of Viscount Irvine in 1781, though her guardian opposed the marriage
