TitleElizabeth Montagu to James Beattie from London
Date7 January 1777
Extent1 Item
Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionConcerned Beattie imagined she was offended with him. She did not blame him, because he is not practiced in subscription. She has never known such a publication not being made known by advertisment in papers. Doubts Lady Mayne's abilities as a bookseller. Not usual for ladies to treat one another in manner she has treated Mrs Montagu, but she will behave with civility and bear all the indignities Lady Newhaven pleases to offer her. But was certainly not displeased with Beattie. [In this letter, Mrs Montagu sometimes refers to 'Lady Mayne', and sometimes correctly to 'Lady Newhaven']. Dr Warton sends regards
