Extent1 Item
Administrative HistoryWilliam Cameron [1751-1810] Was in the MA course at Marischal College from 1766 to 1770, where Beattie would have taught him in his final year. In 1786 he became minister at Kirknewton, near Edinburgh. In 1778 he was intermediary for Hugh Blair in approaching Beattie about new metrical versions for the psalms. He later wrote a continuations of the Minstrel which was published posthomously (Poems on Several Occasions, 1813), as were several of his own psalms paraphrases. After Beattie's death, he wrote informatively to Sir William Forbes about Beattie's teaching methods
DescriptionCameron's knowledge of manners and fashions of the world considerably enlarged [by move to Edinburgh] but not to his satisfaction. Most of the advocate of truth appear as if they were ashamed and diffident of their cause. Hopes to see Beattie's answer ot Priestley soon though it scarcely worth Beattie's while to reply
