TitleElizabeth Montagu to James Beattie from London
Date4 April 1774
Extent1 Item
Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionConsigned the charming Minstrel to Dilly with great satisfaction. Beattie has added many fine stanzas, and she likes the conclusion though it does not belong to the subject. Mrs Montagu has never heard of Dr Law as a writer. Thinks Beattie would do best to neglect him. Longs to see Essay on Laughter. Hurd spoke of Beattie to Mrs Montagu with great esteem, and did not utter a word against the subscritpion. Mrs Montagu approves of Beattie declining professorship at Edinburgh. Does not think he would be happy there.
