Administrative HistorySir William Mayne, later Lord Newhaven. Beattie first met Sir Mayne and Lady Mayne on his visit to London in 1773, probably at Mrs Montagu's house. Sir William was an Irish member of Parliament. He became Lord Newhaven in 1776. The Maynes quickly became close friends of Beattie and were among the main promoters of the scheme to publish Beattie's essays by subscription
DescriptionGreatly regretted missing the Beatties when they returned to Arnos Grove. Glad Mrs Beattie is recovered. Arnos Grove will always be open to them. Brought many of Beattie's subscritpions papers with him and will give some to Lord Dartry and Mr Vesey. Sends compliments to Lord Erroll
