Administrative HistoryBeilby Porteus [1731-1809]. Rector of Lambeth and chaplain to the King in 1769. He was Bishop of Chester between 1776 and 1787 and Bishop of London in 1787-1808. He sent Beattie a copy of his sermons and expressed great admiration for Beattie's Essay on truth and The Minstrel. They met during Beattie's visit to London in 1773, and Porteus became a lifelong friend and supporter
DescriptionHas to return north tomorrow earlier than intended, so not able to visit Porteuses. Majendie has returned Beattie's letter on reasons for declining church of England living. Queen admired motivation in letter. Beattie was anxious that his reasons for continuing a layman should be known at court, because a report was circulating that Beattie could not accept doctrines of Church of England. Beattie admires them.
