Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionHis bad health prevent him to fulfil his obligations, and publication must now wait until next winter. Could Mrs. Montagu and Lady Mayne send printed card to subscribers explaining causes of delay? Discourse on classical learning considerably enlarged. Essay on Laughter finished - 130 quarto pages. Essays are ready for final transcription on the end of poetry, poetical fable, poetical characters and the language of poetry. When he finished remarks on musical expression and on evidences of Christianity it will be ready to go to press. Will answer Priestley when he has health and leasure. Johnson ill informed about language of the Scotch highlanders and Western Islands, and ignorant about improvements of Scotland, and its trade, manufacturers and trees.
