Administrative HistoryBeilby Porteus [1731-1809]. Rector of Lambeth and chaplain to the King in 1769. He was Bishop of Chester between 1776 and 1787 and Bishop of London in 1787-1808. He sent Beattie a copy of his sermons and expressed great admiration for Beattie's Essay on truth and The Minstrel. They met during Beattie's visit to London in 1773, and Porteus became a lifelong friend and supporter
DescriptionJohonson's journey has many things worthy of him, but errors about Scots character. Beattie wants to see English character prevail, but Scots are not all a nation of liars and cheats. Beattie has often defended Johnson, but there are several things in this book which he cannot defend. Not surprised at Johnson's unbelieve about Ossian, but surprised at credulity concerning second sight. Beattie has never been to Isles.
