Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionConfinement by broken arm has brought back nervous symptoms of three years ago. Hard to read and write, and is melancholy about filling the quarto volume. He has abundant materials and in three or four months of good health could put them in order. Refers to Richard Hurd's letter [MS 30/2/184]. Glad Mrs. montagu is pleased with additional stanzas of second book of Minstrel. Still hopes Mrs. Montagu might contribute something to the volume. Essay on Laughter advances slowly because of health
