Administrative HistorySir William Mayne, later Lord Newhaven. Beattie first met Sir Mayne and Lady Mayne on his visit to London in 1773, probably at Mrs Montagu's house. Sir William was an Irish member of Parliament. He became Lord Newhaven in 1776. The Maynes quickly became close friends of Beattie and were among the main promoters of the scheme to publish Beattie's essays by subscription
DescriptionDisappointed not to see Maynes at home, but had to leave in haste because of Mrs Beattie's declining health. Dilly is sending a parcel of 500 subscription papers, for Sir William to divide among friends, especially Lord Dartry and Mr Vesey. If second book of the Minstrel is published this winter, Beattie will heed Vesey's commission regarding it
