Administrative HistoryBeilby Porteus [1731-1809]. Rector of Lambeth and chaplain to the King in 1769. He was Bishop of Chester between 1776 and 1787 and Bishop of London in 1787-1808. He sent Beattie a copy of his sermons and expressed great admiration for Beattie's Essay on truth and The Minstrel. They met during Beattie's visit to London in 1773, and Porteus became a lifelong friend and supporter
