Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionLittle to say of himself to give her pleasure except that Montagu is succesful in his studies and in tolerable health. Beattie has engaged a young man as his assistant in College. The assistant was formerly Beattie's disciple, and one of his deceased son's most intimate friends. The son of a clergyman and what in Scotland is called a probationer, that is licensed to preach but not in full orders. He assists Montagu in his studies. Beattie pleased with success of subscription for flannel for our brave countrymen in Flanders. That advertisement has done more good than all his other works and passed through as many editions as the Pilgrim's Progress. In this contry £1500 is already subscribed. Sedition still busy in north Britain. Two more trials in which the jury was unanimous in finding the charges proved and banished the criminals for fourteen years.
