Administrative HistoryMargaret Valentine [1763-1836]. Beattie's niece, daughter of his sister Jean Valentine. From 1783 she spent increasing amount of time managing Beattie's household, and became his housekeeper in the 1790s. She married George Glennie - Beattie's assistant -in 1797. She inherited Beattie's possessions, including Reynolds portrait
DescriptionHe has met Sir Charles Middleton, and transcribes letter from him, about Admiralty not confirming appointment of Beattie's nephew as liutenant. Middleton advises Beattie to ask Lord Chatham. Beattie has renewed acquaintance with Lord and Lady Cremorne (formerly Dartry), Mrs Boscowan (widow of Admiral), and Mrs Garrick. Hannah More has read over all James Hay Beattie's papers, and is impressed with extraordinary variety of talents.
