Administrative HistorySir William Forbes [1739-1806] Banker, longstanding friend and later biographer of Beattie. From an Episcopalian family, and related to Lord Forbes of Pistligo, whose estates were confiscated for his part in the 1745 rebellion. He was apprenticed to Coutt's bank, becoming a partner in Forbes, Hunter and Co in 1773. He was well-known in literary circles in Edinburgh and London. Beattie met him in Edinburgh in 1765, introduced by Robert Arbuthnot. Forbes was Beattie's banker, adviser on literary matters, and general confidant
DescriptionJames Hay Beattie died this morning at seven. Death as tranquil as life had been innocent and amiable. Retained rational faculties to the end. Consolation that an eternity of happiness is before him. Has left many papers, but will be some time before Beattie can examine them. Would wish if possible to conceal James Hay Beattie' death from his mother, though this may be difficult if she sees the newspapers. Hopes Cadell has paid the fifty guineas [presumably half-share of the copy money for the first volume of Elements]. Beattie will have occasion shortly to draw £140 or £130.
