Administrative HistoryAnne Arbuthnot [1709?-1795]. Widow of a sea captain who died in 1740. Aunt of Robert Arbuthnot. Lived in Peterhead. Beattie frequently lodged with her on his visits there, and greatly respected her intellect and critical judgement. Mrs Montagu granted her an annuity in 1784.
DescriptionSends eight guineas from Mrs Montagu. Quotes Mrs Montagu's account concerning King's illness [letter MS 30/2/580]. Physicians have to be cautious in what they say to parliament, but most of them expect recovery. He has improved under Dr Willis. Beattie praises King's good and gentle government, and wisdom of the first minister.
