| Administrative History | William Laing [1742-1812]. Student at Marischal College 1762-1766 and Beattie's pupil in 1765-1766. He was Master at Aberdeen Grammar School in 1770-1771. Beattie secured his appointment as episcopal minister at Peterhead in 1771. He had studied Medicine, although he did not obtain any qualification, but in 1782, on Beattie's recommendation, he was awarded an MD degree of Marischal College. He remained a close friend of Beattie until the latter's death |
| Description | Adamson admitted to his office [Alexander Adamson, Marischal College 1785-89?, appointed schoolmaster at Peterhead, 1788, after a comparative trial]. Bishop Skinner came to see Beattie today, and satisfied Beattie that nonjurors only want repeal of penal statutes against him . They aim at no jurusdiction over other Episcopalians, or at revenues of old Scottish bishoprics. Skinner's conversation modest, candid and sensible. Beattie told Skinner he would try to stop reports circulating to prejudice of Skinner's party. Beattie opposed to all forms of persecution, and Skinner said he knew this, having been under Beattie's care at college in 1761 [Marischal College 1757-1761]. He was therefore in the first magistrand class taught by Beattie'. Beattie convinced Sievwright has unjustly brought accusations against nonjurors [Norman Sievwright (Marischal College 1744-8), Anglican minister at Brechin, author of Principles, Political and Religious; or a Preservative against innovations in Politics and Religion (Edinburgh, 1767), and a leading opponent of the nonjurors in the Northeast Scotland]. |
