Administrative HistoryMargaret Valentine [1763-1836]. Beattie's niece, daughter of his sister Jean Valentine. From 1783 she spent increasing amount of time managing Beattie's household, and became his housekeeper in the 1790s. She married George Glennie - Beattie's assistant -in 1797. She inherited Beattie's possessions, including Reynolds portrait
DescriptionVery poor health. He had hoped Margaret Valentine would join him, but her plan to stay at Montrose during vacation is natural. Old friend John Gibb the sacrist dead. He hopes to hear that Montagu is attentive and diligent. James Hay Beattie so busy in organ building and botany that Beattie scarsely sees him except at meals. Macintosh dismissed unjustly by concert managers. Beattie and James Hay Beattie lodge at Mr Sutor's, and dine and sup with Laing.
