Administrative HistoryJane Maxwell, Duchess of Gordon from 1767, when she married the Duke. The nature of the relationship with Beattie with her is problematic, and one aspect of Mrs Beattie's mental disorder was thought to be the intense jealuousy for Beattie's attachement to the Duchess
DescriptionPlans for getting James Hay Beattie appointed joint professor with Beattie. Explains the problem Beattie's resignation might cause, and possible problem of having two professors appointed. Dundas will be able to solve this, and Beattie asks Duchess to lay matter before him. Chancellor Lord Bute not yet asked, but Beattie sure he will concur. Glad to hear of 'Solicitor's' [Dundas's?] approaching happiness. Sends Latin performance by James Hay Beattie for Duke and Lord Huntly. Regards to them and Lady Charlotte.
