Administrative HistoryJean Valentine [1726-1793]. She was Beattie's favourite sister. She married John Valentine - the captain of a merchant ship - in 1757. Beattie often stayed with her in Montrose and it was probably on one of these occasions that he met the Montrose literary circle, including Aaron Lithgow and Charles Thomson. DescriptionNiece and nephew will remain with him till the beginning of week because of severe weather, then they will all go to Montrose. Please ask David to write saying how long he will be in Montrose and what state of affairs are in. Please give Beattie's service to Nisbet, and say he did what he could for Nisbet's Musselmen. Give them letter of introduction to Duchess of Gordon, and showed them arabic manuscript in the college, possibly part of Koran.
