Administrative HistoryJean Valentine [1726-1793]. She was Beattie's favourite sister. She married John Valentine - the captain of a merchant ship - in 1757. Beattie often stayed with her in Montrose and it was probably on one of these occasions that he met the Montrose literary circle, including Aaron Lithgow and Charles Thomson. Her daughter Margaret became Beattie's housekeeper and carer
DescriptionBeattie's conversations with Captain Squires of the Ariadne, who praises David Valentine, but says despite Beattie's interest he is unlikely to be made a liutenant, though he is an acting one. Reference to James Valentine, who should get a lot of prize money. Sir Hugh Palliser will recommend him to Admiral Hood.
