Administrative HistoryBeilby Porteus [1731-1809]. Rector of Lambeth and chaplain to the King in 1769. He was Bishop of Chester between 1776 and 1787 and Bishop of London in 1787-1808. He sent Beattie a copy of his sermons and expressed great admiration for Beattie's Essay on truth and The Minstrel. They met during Beattie's visit to London in 1773, and Porteus became a lifelong friend and supporter
DescriptionHe saw a manuscript by Bishop Butler from Mrs Arbuthnot. Monboddo on language. Having finished grammatical treatise, Beattie thought of putting together some things relating to evidences of Christianity, but will wait until his mind is at ease.
