Administrative HistoryWilliam Laing [1742-1812]. Student at Marischal College 1762-1766 and Beattie's pupil in 1765-1766. He was Master at Aberdeen Grammar School in 1770-1771. Beattie secured his appointment as episcopal minister at Peterhead in 1771. He had studied Medicine, although he did not obtain any qualification, but in 1782, on Beattie's recommendation, he was awarded an MD degree of Marischal College. He remained a close friend of Beattie until the latter's death
DescriptionBeattie sent Laing's sermons to Dilly, but the elder Dilly is in the country with consuption, which is likely to deprive Beattie of a very industrious bookseller and friendly correspondent. Charles dilly showed the sermons to three clergymen who have not yet given an opinion on them. About reforming the Psalmody of the church and the publication of an anonimous pamphelet authord by Beattie: A Letter to the Reverend Hugh Blair, D.D One of the Ministers of Edinburgh: On the Improvement ofPsalmody in Scotland (1778). [Postscript] Has just received melancholy news of Lord Errol's death [3 June 1778]
