Administrative HistorySir William Mayne, later Lord Newhaven. Beattie first met Sir Mayne and Lady Mayne on his visit to London in 1773, probably at Mrs Montagu's house. Sir William was an Irish member of Parliament. He became Lord Newhaven in 1776. The Maynes quickly became close friends of Beattie and were among the main promoters of the scheme to publish Beattie's essays by subscription
DescriptionCongratulations to Sir William on becoming a peer on July 2nd. Twenty sheets of the quarto volume now printed. Beattie hopes size of the book should satisfy the public. Re: Americal resistence. A very good pamphelet appeared months earlier in answer to the declaration of Congress and Beattie caused a small edition of it to be printed at Aberdeen to put heart into the friends of government.
