Administrative HistoryLady (Frances) Mayne, later Lady Newhaven [d. 1801]. Wife of Sir William Mayne. Formerly Frances Allen, the heiress of a considerable estate in Ireland. She kept up a correspondence with Beattie and his wife for some years
DescriptionThanks for Letter [MS 30/2/254] He received £300 in two sums from Sir William. To be lodged with Duke of Gordon whose plans of affairs is most methodical and regular. Duke's principal agent in money matters is Beattie's particular friend and Mrs Beattie's new relation [John Ross?]. This will satisfy Lady Mayne that Beattie has acted prudently. Setting out for Highlands and will stay for six or eight weeks. Will not complain of his health in this letter since he has done it so much before. Has materials for many more volumes of Essays, but it owes it to himself, his friends and the public not to write until his constitution is re-established. When does Sir William change his signature?
