Administrative HistorySir William Mayne, later Lord Newhaven. Beattie first met Sir Mayne and Lady Mayne on his visit to London in 1773, probably at Mrs Montagu's house. Sir William was an Irish member of Parliament. He became Lord Newhaven in 1776. The Maynes quickly became close friends of Beattie and were among the main promoters of the scheme to publish Beattie's essays by subscription
DescriptionEnclosure For Miss Reynolds. Anxious about the Maynes's health, as epidemical fever rages in London. James Hay Beattie has been very ill with lingering fever. Beattie almost blind with weak eyes. Busy with manuscripts and hopes to go to press in two or three months. Additional essays will equal Essay on truth in size.
