Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionShe received Beattie's charming letter of July 5th and would have answered directly, but next day thrown into confusion with little nephew Matt coming from school with violent fever. She thinks Beattie should get Lord Kinnooull to write to Lord Mansfield to tell him Beattie's poor health and persecutions, and that he would be glad for some sponsorship in Scotland. Salary must be left at the discretion of the King. Beattie was right to be cautious of opening his designs to the person who so carefully concealed himself. Glad Beattie called Lord Kinnoull who respect religion and loves virtue
