Alexander Chalmers [1759-1834] Son of James Chalmers printer in Aberdeen. Marischal College 1774-78, pupil of Beattie. Journalist and writer in London from 1777. Edited an edition of Beattie's poems with biograhpy, 1805
Description
Since leaving Aberdeen, depressed with lack of success. Wants to try writing. Old pupil, who acquired taste for belles lettres and philosophy under Beattie. Has submitted anonymous letteres and essays to newspapers, which have been copied by other periodicals. Wants to submit to bookseller. Asks introduction from Beattie to the Dillys [Chalmers was evidently unaware that dilly had died]. Chalmers' brother would forward Beattie's letter immediately.
