Date10 June 1778
Extent1 Item
Administrative HistoryWilliam Cameron [1751-1810] attended an MA course from 1766 to 1770, and Beattie likely taught him in his final year. He bacame Minister at Kirknewton, near Edinburgh in 1786. He was intermediary for Hugh Blair in approaching Beattie about new metrical versions for the psalms in 1778, and he later wrote a continuation for the Minstrel that was published posthumously in 1813
DescriptionReceived Beattie's letter of 15 May [concerning Psalmody], and wrote to Dr Blair accordingly. Blair approves Beatie's scheme, and thinks Beattie better qualified to carry it out. The composition so far transmitted to the committee does not combine simplicity with elegance. If Beattie would send some specimens, they would afford hope that the undertaking was not desperate. Poetical talents not Hebrew learning are wanted, and Beattie can provide this
