Frederick Montagu [1738-1800] Barrister and MP. friend of Mason and Gray. Not related to Mrs Montagu
Description
Delivered second book of Minstrel to Mrs Montagu and they read it together. Frederick Montagu likes beginning of second book better than the end. Has more imagery and animated descriptions. Latter part more chaste and philosophical. Beattie's name was mentionedwith honour in House of Commons in debate on booksellers bill, but House of Lords barbarous enough to reject it
