| Administrative History | Thomas Taylor was born in Keith, Moray, in 1897. After graduating in classics from Aberdeen University in 1919 and then LLB in 1922, he was called to the Scottish Bar in 1924. He was later appointed advocate depute in 1929 and senior advocate depute in 1934. He returned to Aberdeen University as Professor of Law in 1935, where he remained until being appointed Principal of Aberdeen University (1948-1962). He died in 1962.
Thomas Johnston was born at Kirkintilloch and educated at Glasgow University. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1922 and five years later, when Ramsay MacDonald became Britain's first Labour Prime Minister,he was appointed as Under-Secretary of State for Scotland. Johnston lost his seat in 1931 but was returned to Parliament a few years later and finally retired from the House of Commons in 1945. Later posts included a period as governor of the British Broadcasting Board (1955-56), Fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland and Chancellor of Aberdeen University (1951-65). |
