Administrative HistoryAlexander Wallace Chalmers (1800-1862), Governor at Aberdeen Prison, and his wife, Mary Jameson (1795-1878), had seven children: Christian (Chrissie), later Mrs James Smith (1826-1876), was the mother of Reverend James Smith, who transcribed the papers of John Chalmers (1836-1861), the youngest son of Alexander and Mary Chalmers. Their other children were Elizabeth, later Mrs James Cardno of Fraserburgh (1828-1903), Richard (1829-1852), Alexander (1831-1868), Samuel (1833-1858), and William (1834 -1863).
SourceThis collection was bequeathed to the university in 1975 by James Farquhar Cardno, descendant of Elizabeth Chalmers (1828-1903), daughter of A. W. Chalmers. Transcripts of many of the letters were made by the Rev. J. Smith and accompany the originals. Swords, instruments, framed pictures and medals of members of the family were bequeathed with the manuscripts.
DescriptionCollection of family letters and papers, including scrap books and sketch books belonging to the children of Alexander Wallace Chalmers, and a selection of printed books belonging to the Chalmers and Cardno families. Also includes two copies of a dissertation written by Mavis Walker on the life of John Chalmers.

Physical DescriptionMS 2884/6/1 is in very poor condition: both the front and back cover have become detached and the spine is badly damaged. MS 2884/3/1 is in a similar condition.
