DescriptionCopy of dissertation, written by Mavis Walker, Main History, 3rd Year, 1965-1966, on the life of John Chalmers, entitled: 'From cadet to assistant commissioner in the punjab (1855 - 1860). (Some experiences of John Chalmers, A.M.)'. Includes details of his upbringing and family life and his posting to India in 1855 as a cadet with the East India Company. Copies of his letters detailing his experiences in India, written to members of his family, are pasted inside, as are a selection of maps, and there is a detailed account, illustrated by extracts from his letters, of the role he played during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. His work as an assistant commissioner is also covered in some detail.
