[Samuel Chalmers enlisted in the H.E.I.C. Artillery in 1854. He was sent from Calcutta to Allahabad and then to Meerut where he was appointed Assistant in the India Electric Telegraph Department where he remained until 1858. He accompanied Nicholson's Moveable Column to Delhi and was attached to the 52nd Regiment during the siege. (As certified by W.
