Date19th century - 20th century
Extent2 boxes (0.66 linear metres)
Creator NameJohn Malcolm Bulloch (1867 - 1938), journalist
Administrative HistoryJohn Malcolm Bulloch was born in 1867 and graduated from the University of Aberdeen, MA 1888. His father, John Bulloch, was editor of the Aberdeen magazine, 'Scottish Notes and Queries' and author of 'George Jamesone, the Scottish Vandyck' (Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1885) and numerous other literary and historical pieces. He followed his father into journalism, beginning his career with the 'Aberdeen Free Press', but later moving to London, where he worked on various illustrated papers, including 'The Sketch', 'The Illustrated London News' and 'The Graphic' (of which he was editor). From 1924, he was chief literary critic of Allied Newspapers and a well-known theatre critic. Despite living and working in London, he retained a deep commitment to his roots in Aberdeen, with regular contributions to the 'Aberdeen University Review', and an active role in the administration and publications of the Third Spalding Club. He died on 6 March 1938, after a short illness.

For further details on his life, career and publications, see obituaries in the 'Aberdeen University Review', 25, (1937 - 38),195-199.
SourceMS 2798/1-6: gifted to the University in September 1972, by Miss Barbara Greenhill, John Malcolm Bulloch's niece.
DescriptionCollected papers and volumes from John Malcolm Bulloch's library, including printed and manuscript works, correspondence, photographs, newspaper cuttings and diaries.
AccrualsNone expected.
ArrangementIt was felt that the present collection, presented in 1972 by Bulloch’s niece, Miss Barbara Greenhill, should be kept together under Bulloch’s name in the manuscript department, although much of it is in printed form. An exception was made for some volumes of John Bulloch, senior, which were removed from MS 2798 to join MS 2482, the collected family papers of J. M. Bulloch’s parents. Distinctions which allow for a convenient arrangement are made between manuscripts, typescripts, printed volumes and collected extracts, but these categories inevitably show some duplication.

Related MaterialAberdeen University Library holds many manuscript collections and printed volumes which were presented by Dr. Bulloch (LL.D. 1921) and which bear his personal bookplate. There is as yet no single listing of these items, which were gifted at many different times. Some, such as the historical collections concerning his Gordon family researches (MS 3051) and the numerous local pamphlets, are readily identifiable. Other volumes, such as works by different authors which are annotated by Bulloch, can be found in the general library stock.
Publication NoteMost of the papers described above were used by John Malcolm Bulloch in his extensive local history and genealogical publications. A list of titles has not yet been assembled, but full details of John Malcolm Bulloch's publications held by Aberdeen University Library can be found via the Library catalogue.
