| Description | Legal and financial papers as bundled, arranged chronologically by current head of family, including the various Arbuthnott trusts under the originating Viscount. Many of the original bundles contain a mixture of legal, financial and estate papers.
When the 9th Viscount died in 1891, the estate was so heavily burdened with debt that his son refused the succession and a trust was formed for the creditors; the whole estates of the 9th Viscount were placed in a trust which dealt with all the estate business. Accordingly the documents of the Trustee on the Arbuthnott estates from that date are included under MS2764/2, estate papers.
The trust documents of the trusts of the 12th and 13th Viscounts again include estate papers for lands purchased in this period. The position of the trusts in 1921 is explained in the memorandum drawn up for the 14th Viscount [MS 2764/1/2/3/13/9.]. |
