Anna (Nan) Shepherd (1893-1981), M.A., LL.D., lecturer in English at Aberdeen Teachers' Training College between 1915 until her retirement in 1956. She was awared the degree of LL.D. in 1964. She published novels and poems; The Quarry Wood (1928), The Weatherhouse (1930), A Pass In The Grampians (1933) and a volume of poetry, In The Cairngorms (1934).

DescriptionLetters from Agnes Mure Mackenzie from London and Edinburgh to her friend and former colleague Anna (Nan) Shepherd. The letters contain accounts of negotiations with publishers, criticism of the correspondents' own works and comments on other Scottish writers. The following works by Mackenzie are mentioned in the correspondence: Without Conditions (1923), Women In Shakespeare's Plays (1924), The Half Loaf (1925),The Quiet Lady (1926), Lost Kinnellan (1927), Playgoers' Handbook to English Renaissance Drama (1927), The Process of Literature (1929), The Falling Wind (1930), Between Sun and Moon (1932), Historical Survey of Scottish Literature (1933), A History of Scotland 6 volumes (1934-1941), SIngle Combat (1934), Scottish Pageant (1946-1950), History of Britain and Europe for Scottish Schools 3 parts (1949-1951), Apprentice Majesty (1950) and Rival Establishments of Scotland 1560-1690 (1952).

39 letters are holograph and three typewritten, all are initialled. The majority are undated and seldom bear an address or heading.
