TitleReverend W. J. Bicknell to Augusta Cargill: correspondence
Date1847 - 1859
Extent6 items
DescriptionSix letters written by Reverend W. J. Bicknell to his daughter Augusta Cargill (later Roberts), apart from MS 2566/7/1 which is addressed to her mother-in-law, Mrs Cargill.

The letters are held loosely within a paper cover and the following comments written in pencil by an unknown person: 'Distinctly odd letters to his widowed daughter - the writer seems to have been living a recluse sort of existence, buried in his library of classical and religious literature and at odds with the world. His advice rejecting a proposal to send young David Cargill to the Blue Coat School [?as it] offends his Methodist scruples, earns a 4 -page tirade: reflecting upon the possible fate of his library...'
