TitleAberdeen Clarion Club minute book
Date15 September 1899 - 21 November 1903
Extent1 volume
DescriptionThe volume starts with a list of founder members & their addresses. In the minutes of the first meeting of the Club, held in the Trades Hall, Aberdeen on Friday September 15th 1899, it states that the meeting, presided over by Mr A Robertson, President of the Trades Council, was held for the purpose of forming a "Clarion Club" on the lines indicated by Arnold Allcard (Allard?) in the "Clarion" of September 9th 1899. A vote was taken to form the Club and a committee then elected to draw up the rules.

At the next meeting on Friday the 29th Sept, the rules were agreed and the officials of the committee were elected. Rule 2 of "The Aberdeen Clarion Club" states "That the Club would exist for the study and public discussion of all questions relating to Literature, Science, Art and the Drama, viewed from the Socialist standpoint.". It was agreed that the annual business meeting would be held on the third Friday of September.

The minutes vary in their regularity but do include a Roll of Members for 1900-1901 and 1901-1902 listing their names and addresses. They also note the subjects of lectures and discussions, such as on the book, "Women & Economics", on Ibsen's play, "A Doll's House" and a "hat night" where questions such as, Will revolutionary Socialism stand? Is the British Empire worthy of support? and Should Socialists take offices in Public Bodies? were discussed. There are also notes of social evenings and events, such as balls.
