| Administrative History | James Forbes of Seaton (d. 1839) married Margaret Gordon, daughter of Rear Admiral William Gordon, and had one daughter, Elizabeth (d. 30 September 1861), who was heiress to Seaton House, located on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
Lord James Hay of Seaton House (1788-1862) was the younger son of George Hay, 7th Marquis of Tweeddale, and Lady Hannah Maitland, daughter of the Earl of Lauderdale. He was colonel of the 86th Regiment of Foot and a general in the army, at one time A.D.C. to the Duke of Wellington. He married Elizabeth Forbes, daughter and heiress to James Forbes of Seaton, in 1813.
Major Malcolm V. Hay of Seaton (1881-1963), a grandson of Lord and Lady James Hay, was a historian who came from a noted Aberdeen Catholic family. He wrote ‘A Chain of Error in Scottish History’ (London, 1928) which identified misleading Scottish Protestant historians. He also worked on the history of Blairs College, Aberdeenshire. He married as his second wife Alice Ivy, Mrs Moncrieff Paterson. He was awarded an honorary LL.D. by Aberdeen University in 1950, and left his papers to the University library at his death in 1963. |
