Administrative HistoryWilliam Kelly (1861-1944), A.R.S.A., LL.D. (Aberdeen, 1919), architect, was an apprentice in the office of William Smith (1817-1891), city architect of Aberdeen, and his son, John Smith. William Smith was concerned with the building of Balmoral Castle and his father, John Smith (1781-1852), was the first to hold the post of city architect and was involved in the erection of several well-known buildings in Aberdeen. He was in turn the son of a local builder, William Smith, and the Smith family cooperated with the celebrated Aberdeen architect, Archibald Simpson (1790-1847).

Also included are three tracings for the plinth of a statue to be placed in the neighbourhood of Union Bridge and Diamond Street, Aberdeen, and a genealogical tree and notes regarding the family of John Smith.
