DescriptionSmall quarto vellum bound manuscript with 200 numbered pages, pages 142 - 200 blank. The first leaf (pages 1 and 2) is missing, its counterleaf (pages 11 and 12) is present but loose. The manuscript apears to be a copy of c. 1700.

Contents:
pages 3 - 12: "A Preface to the Reader" composed in "this present year1667" [by William Forbes] explaining his task and relating traditions of the early ancestry of the Forbes family. Included in the 1819 edition.
Pages 3 - 123: "A description of the Genealogy of the House of Forbes Compiled by Master Matthew Lumsden of Tillykairn Anno 1580". This is another version of the text printed in 1819 and reprinted in 1883:
Genealogy of the Family of Forbes from the account of Mr Matthew Lumsden of Tulliekerne written in 1850. Inverness 1819, re-printed by John Noble 1883. (Aberdeen University Library reference L A F3 For L 2).

The manuscript [copy made c. 1700?] agrees with the printed version but has some additional names where the original had gaps, slightly modernised spelling and different versions of place names, and in places seems more correct than the printed version; e.g. on p. 111 of the MS / p. 59 of the printed version, the 1883 prining has collapsed the details for Arthur Forbes of Echt and Thomas Forbes, omitting a second wife and progeny, while the manuscript has the full version. The manuscript omits Lumsden's colophon poem at the end of the otiginal..
Pages 124 - 128: "This is the just copie of the Indenture past Betwixt the Houses of Forbes and Mcintosh in Anno 1467"
Pages 128 - 135: ""The Dates of diverse Fields and remarkable Accidents fallen out in the Realm of Scotland" Events between 1332 and 1661
Pages 136 - 141: Genealogical notes on the Forbes families, mainly memoranda of further genealogical research to be carried out.
