Date17th century
Extent1 item
DescriptionOne of two manuscripts in the same 17th century hand, written on paper, in Old Scots as if to form part of a pamphlet or pamphlets on sheets folded into 8" x 6.5" format. This one is incomplete and has "Pitfoddels" written in pencil in the margin of one page. "Indytment agnt. the west country rebels anno 1666 Captain Andrew Arnot and Major John McCulloch". This seemingly refers to a disturbance at Dumfries on 4th November last when town was entered by armed band who seized Sir James ?Turner, an officer of H.M. forces, and would have captured the minister of Dumfries, who eluded them. Plundering in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire and shires of Wigton, Ayr and Lanark and other western counties. Commanded by Wallace of Auchins [?] , Joseph Leirmont and others. Covenanting oath retaken at Lanark on 26th November marched to within two miles of Edinburgh and fought with H.M. forces on 28th November last at [?] Pentland. [MS. breaks off at this point-there is another sheet in the same hand giving legal opinion regarding the crime of theft which may or may not be part of above MS. or relevant to the following one.]
