Administrative HistoryWilliam MacGillivray was born in 1796 in Aberdeen. He graduated MA from King’s College in 1815, and spent some years building up a broad knowledge of natural science, keeping careful journals of his travels. He held several posts in Edinburgh in the 1820s and 1830s and in 1841 became Professor of Natural History at Marischal College, Aberdeen. He lived at 110 High Street, Old Aberdeen, next to King’s College. He wrote copiously on all branches of natural history, but ornithology was his speciality, and in 1827 he wrote the text to accompany John James Audubon’s (1785-1851) famous illustrations for his Book of Birds. He died in Aberdeen in 1852.
