| Administrative History | Daniel Cottier was born in Glasgow and was apprenticed to John Cairney & Co, glass-stainers in Glasgow, at the age of fourteen. After a period of study under Madox-Brown in London he went to work as a foreman designer for Field & Allen in Leith in 1862. By the mid-1860s he had established his own business in Glasgow and had married Marion Field, daughter of his former employer William Field. In 1867 he moved to London and six years later he had opened his New York house, as well as establishing himself in Australia. These overseas activities mean he is often credited with introducing the Aesthetic movement to America and Australia. He died in Florida and is buried in New York. |
