DescriptionLetters to Henry, later Sir Henry, Yule including letter from [Howett?], Umballa, dated 10 July [1857], offering condolences to Yule on the death of his brother (MS 1162/3/2/2). The writer notes that upon hearing the news he wrote to a friend in his brother's troop, an officer named Blair, asking him to provide any further details he could regarding the circumstances surrounding his brother's death: 'I now send you an extract from his letter. Your poor brother is universally regretted by all, and a finer nor more gallant soldier never breathed.' He then goes on to comment on the drastic military situation in India noting: 'We seem to be just as far from taking Delhi as ever.'

Letter addressed from Gibraltar, c.1880, describes difficulties of helping families other than those of officers engaged in his service and dissatisfaction with the Staff Corps pension (MS 1162/3/2/17). MS 1162/3/2/23 is a copy of this letter, probably made by A. F. Yule. MS 1162/3/2/28 is also a copy of a letter written by R. C. Napier to Henry Yule, addressed from Franz Hill, Camberley, dated 18 December 1884. In it he refers to the 'depressed state' of the Civil Engineers and history of the Indian Mutiny which he has been reading: 'How all authorities turned a deaf ear to the warnings given them.' Also refers to current situation [in India] and possible threat from Russia in this area.

The majority of the letters are written by R. C. Napier. Places of address include: Delhi, Cawnpore, Gwalior, Calcutta, The Convent at Gibraltar, Ravensbury, Cornwall Gardens.
