Administrative History | David Chytraeus (David Kochhafe) 1530 - 1600, evangelical theologian, student of Martin Luther of Phillip Melanchthon; Professor of Theology at the University of Rostock, Germany Daniel Rogers c. 1536 - 1591, poet and diplomat |
Description | Draft reply to Chytraeus's letter to Daniel Rogers of 25 December 1590 (MS 1009/2/13).
Abstract: By the time that letter arrived in March (Daniel) Rogers, to whom it was addressed, had died. “Since I was his familiar friend for many years, long ago in Germany under our common teacher Phillip Melanchthon and later in France, and thereafter in this country where we served together as Secretaries to her Majesty’s Council, I have thought it a duty I owed my old friend and fellow-worker to answer letters from his friends in his place”. Chytraeus’ letter had been shown to members of the Council, who thanked him for his information on Polish and Swedish affairs, on which Beale comments. Beale considers Poland unwise to provoke a conflict with the Turks and mentions that the English envoy sent to Constantinople, “to further commercial business”, and King Stephen (of Hungary) thought a peaceful settlement advisable. He mentions that he knew the Chancellor of Poland “of old as Rector at Padua”. Preparations afoot in England to counter Spanish moves in Brittany. Refers to a paper by Chytraeus on the Hanzeatic League, which Rogers had shown him. Asks Chytraeus to continue to correspond as he had done with Rogers. [Abstract by James D. George]
